Code

Code is a set of written instructions. A developer writes those instructions so a computer can follow them in a specific order.

When beginners hear the word code, it helps to think of it as directions. If the directions are clear, the computer can do the job. If the directions are incomplete or incorrect, the result breaks or behaves in an unexpected way.
